Aprés Ski For Non-Drinkers
With health consciousness on the rise, finding a good selection of alcohol-free drinks has never been easier. In addition to the standard selection of soft drinks, most bars and restaurants serve tea, coffee, and hot chocolate to warm up from the chilling air, and some offer non-alcoholic punch and glüwein.
The cocktail bars can shake up a selection of mocktails, and most places will have an alcohol-free beer. Many bars also now serve alcohol free fizz, my favourite being the Freixenet Rosé at BEAUSiTE.
Zermatt offers plenty of après-ski activities for those who prefer to skip the party scene. From cosy cafes serving steaming hot chocolate to wellness retreats and cultural explorations, there’s something to suit every taste.

Alcohol-Free Après Ski in Zermatt

Tips for First-Time Visitors
If you’ve never been to Zermatt or experienced Après Ski, here are our tips for first-time visitors.
What to Wear for Après Ski in Zermatt
As the name ‘après ski’ suggests, most people will be rocking up in their ski and snowboard gear.
Although it would be easy to think that Zermatt is all Moncler-clad skiers who look like they’ve just stepped off the winter fashion runway, you’ll find most people in everyday brands from Peak Performance to Decathlon.
Like any situation in life, wear what you love, think of layers to strip down to for busting out the dance moves, and remember, once the sun goes down, it will get chilly, so be ready to load those layers back on.
Carry comfortable footwear in a backpack if you feel you can’t safely or comfortably enjoy après in your ski boots. Snowboarders have the advantage here.
We have all-mountain ski boots with a walk mode, ideal for skiing, ski touring and après ski.
Even though our boots have Gripwalk, we find on concrete and other slick flooring Ski Boot Traction gives us extra grip and lengthens the life of our Gripwalk plates. While skiing, we store them at the back of our boots, using our power strap.
If you’re skipping the skiing and heading straight to après, keep it casual, comfortable and layered. You’ll still need toasty outer layers, a hat, and gloves for when the sun goes down.
Don’t forget a set of good-quality lenses. Zermatt gets around 300 days of sunshine annually, and you’ll want sunglasses to protect those peepers.
For special events, you will find that most people will be on theme. Tartan for Burns Night, Green for Paddy’s Day, 80’s onesies for Retro Day.
Generally, the more ridiculous the outfit, the better, but if you prefer to be understated, a subtle hint of colour as a nod to the festivities will work just fine.

Plan Ahead
Popular spots get booked quickly for table reservations, especially in peak season or for special events. Where possible, book ahead to avoid disappointment.
Choose venues with outdoor terraces or panoramic windows to soak in the landscape and the iconic Matterhorn at sunset.
Keeping Your Gear Safe
While Zermatt is generally considered a safe place, theft can happen anywhere and occasionally does. There are also cases of people taking skis that they mistook for their own, and many rental skis will look the same.
Rental skis will have the ski shop logo and often a sticker with your name. Make sure to check this before setting off.
At mountain bars and restaurants, we pair our skis–one of Sam’s and one of mine—and then put them on separate ski racks. Skiers and Snowboarders can also use a cable lock to secure their planks to the rack or each other’s equipment.
The lift stations also have ski lockers, so securing your gear in a locker could be ideal if you plan to start the next day where you finish today. The big lockers have space for skis, snowboards, boots, helmets and poles and will dry overnight, ready for your adventure tomorrow.
Keep track of your loose items. Carabiner your gloves to your trousers or stuff them in your pockets, with your hat and buff.
If you have it with you, place them inside your helmet or a backpack and don’t let them too far out of sight. These are things that easily ‘go missing’, especially when alcohol is involved.

Paying, Tipping & Cost
Regarding paying and tipping in Zermatt, things are pretty straightforward but with a local twist. Most places, from charming alpine restaurants to mountain huts, are happy to accept credit and debit cards.
However, it’s always a good idea to carry some Swiss Francs (CHF) for smaller transactions or more traditional establishments. ATMs are easy to find around the town if you need cash.
Remember to have Euros (EUR) for any trips to Italy. Many places in Cervinia, including the two Refugios at Plateau Rosa, will accept cards and Swiss Francs (CHF), but to be on the safe side, it’s helpful to have local currency.
The Swiss tend to keep tipping simple. Service charges are often included in restaurants, so there’s no pressure to leave a big tip. Tipping is completely at your own discretion and not expected.
That said, rounding up the bill to the nearest CHF 5 or 10 or leaving a few extra Francs for excellent service is appreciated.
Depending on where you go, drinks in Zermatt can range from “Oh, that’s reasonable” to “Wait, did I just buy a whole vineyard?”
A hot chocolate or regular coffee usually sets you back around CHF 4-6, while a fancy latte might cost closer to CHF 7.
For something stronger, a pint of local beer typically costs CHF 7-10, and a glass of wine hovers around CHF 8-12.
Cocktails are pricier, averaging CHF 15-20, especially in upscale bars or mountain lodges.
For premium spirits, the sky’s the limit.. However, to avoid heart attacks, check the price of your fancy gin and tonic before ordering.
Learn the Local Etiquette
Zermatt has a laid-back vibe, but it’s always appreciated when visitors respect the local culture and traditions. While you aren’t likely to see the local authorities much, they do like to keep a sense of quiet, especially late at night.
Remember to keep the noise down when falling out of bars and clubs late at night.
Closing Thoughts on Après Ski Zermatt
Zermatt effortlessly blends adventure, culture, and indulgence into a perfect alpine escape. Whether you’re carving down the slopes, sipping a luxurious cocktail, or enjoying the serene views of the Matterhorn, this Swiss gem offers an experience for everyone.
The après-ski scene is where Zermatt truly shines. It’s a harmonious mix of lively and laid-back, with bustling mountain bars for those looking to dance into the night and tranquil terraces where you can quietly toast a day well-spent.
Planning goes a long way here, as those coveted spots with panoramic views fill up fast. Keep your gear safe with clever tricks—like splitting up your skis or using lockers—and keep an eye on those gloves when the drinks start flowing.
On the practical side, paying and tipping in Zermatt is refreshingly straightforward. Carry some Swiss Francs alongside your credit card, and remember that tipping is subtle—rounding up or adding a few extra Francs will do the trick.
Drinks can range from affordable to extravagant, so don’t be surprised when your fancy latte or gin and tonic has an alpine premium.
